 Chincoteague Pony Farm

"Forever own a piece of Chincoteague from this family run farm where the ponies roam free"

The Story

Donald Leonard owned his first horse in 1937, when he was just 12 years old.  He has been surrounded by them ever since.  He married Martha in June, 1946, and Carlton was born in '51.  Three years later, in '54, Jane came along.  Don bought 28 acres of "Wildcat," (The area beyond North Main Street) in 1957, the majority of which has become part of the Pony Farm.  Donna was born in '59, and Arthur in '64.  During the 60's, Don more than doubled his acreage by purchasing 30 more acres adjacent to the original 28.  The family moved "up the neck" to what is now Carlton's house.  During the Storm of '62, The Leonards lost their whole herd of ponies to hypothermia.  After a few years of rebuilding the property, Don started his herd of Chincoteague Ponies once again.  In 1973, Don and Martha opened the Refuge Motor Inn on Maddox Boulevard, and the family moved there to run the business.  In 1990, Don and Martha retired to their home on the farm, leaving the Inn to their children.  All four children and their families now live on the lane, along with Don, Martha, and the herd of wild Chincoteague Ponies.  Every year, Don and his sons sell the foals in order to maintain the farm and the herd.  Through all of this change, the constants have been Don's love of ponies and the location, personality, and vitality of the farm itself.
